Welcome to Dalbergia Preservation. This website is dedicated to education and awareness on preservation and reforestation of Endangered Tree Species in Brasil. The flagship species and the current main concern in our reforestation project is Dalbergia Nigra (Brazilian Rosewood). Why ? Simple. It is currently ‘THE’ most threatened species in the world. None the less, there are other Dalbergia species we would like to include in our project in the future.
Several of these species are not indiginous to Brasil but, are nevertheless under threat due to deforestation. Due to new International laws protecting several of the species from Brazil, a new source for Rosewoods and currently a hotspot for deforestation is occuring in Madagascar. This is leading to the rapid depletion of several dalbergia (rosewood) species from that region of the world. With little government concern and regulation in this smaller island off the coast of Africa, it is becoming a growing concern with many environmental groups. It has been reported that 50% of the remaining Rainforests in this country has been cut down in just the last 20 years. We hope to source some seed stock from these species for future cultivation before it’s too late.
- Dalbergia Species - True Rosewoods
- Tulipwood-(Dalbergia Frutescens) Origin-Brazil
- Kingwood-(Dalbergia Cearensis) Origin-Brazil
- Amazon Rosewood-(Dalbergia Spruceana) Origin-Brazil
- Guatemala Rosewood-(Dalbergia Tucarensis) Origin-Guatemala
- Honduran Rosewood-(Dalbergia Stevensonii) Origin-Honduras
- Madagascar Rosewood-(Dalbergia Sp.) Origin-Island of Madagascar
- Palisandra-(Dalbergia Baronii) Origin-Madagascar
- Bois de Rose-(Dalbergia Maritima) Origin-Madagascar
- Mexican Cocobolo-(Dalbergia Retusa) Origin-Mexico
- African Blackwood-(Dalbegia Melanoxylon) Origin-Africa
These are a few other species currently threatened with extinction that we will incorporate into our reforestation efforts as our conditions allow it. I have listed these in order of endangerment and priority.
- Pau Brasil (Caesalpinia echinata) - Already included.
- Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla)
- Imbuya - (Phoebe Porosa)
- Jequitiba Rosa - (Cariniana Legalis)
- Cedro Rosa - (Cedrella Odorata)
The major cause of species currently in danger of extinction are centuries of unmanaged harvesting with no plan enacted for their preservation or develpment of sustainable sources for future generations. If we don’t learn from those mistakes and begin to create sustainable sources, it’s inevitable we will lose many of these species forever.
We hope you enjoy our site, find it educational and join our efforts to preserve some of the most endangered trees in the world. As you can see, there is much work to be done to prevent the loss of many species. We need your support to continue our work.
Peace !
